Dear Companions in Christ:
We are all acutely reminded of the difficulties and challenges before the United States at this particular moment in history. The ongoing pandemics of COVID-19 and white supremacy, racism, and anti-Black bias continue to infect our nation at alarming rates. And as we look to the upcoming Inauguration of the 46th Presidential administration on Wednesday, January 20, there are significant threats of violence in Washington, D.C., as well as in the capitals of the fifty states.
It is not lost on us that in the same week there are challenges to our democratic ideals by threats of violence, our nation will also celebrate the life and witness of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 18. The fact that we will honor Dr. King in the midst of possibilities of violence in our national and state capitals reminds us that Dr. King’s dream of justice for all, grounded in the way of peace and love, is more urgent than ever. In the words of Dr. King we must “decide to stick with love as hate is too great a burden to bear.”
As Christians following the Prince of Peace, Jesus the Christ, we are compelled to pray and work for peace, with justice, for all. On Tuesday, January 19, at 5 p.m., the eve of the Inauguration, we call on the people and parishes of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut to join us via Zoom in “A Time of Prayer for the Nation.” Together with the clergy of our ECCT Cathedral and the parishes of Hartford, we will offer The Great Litany followed by The Supplication and prayers for peace and for the nation in this time of anxiety and threat. We invite you to join in these prayers of penitence and supplication, asking God to watch over and care for our national and state capitals that we may have a peaceful transfer of power this week. Pray for the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.
